MATS Bootcamp - Ships in Bottles and all things nautical

For the month of June, out MATS Bootcamp assigment involved Ships in Bottles and all things nautical.  I really went for this mini in terms of sketching and I took Lilla's advice by just drawing and not thinking about what the final product might be. Here are just a few sketches, I also have pirates, pirate ships and lots and lots of whales! Hopefully I will be able to use them later.

Ecojot Sketchbook Cover contest

I have always admired the products and ethos of stationary company Ecojot, so was very excited when they launched their fabulous Sketchbook Cover Contest last month.  Excitement turned to disappointment when I realised I couldn't officially enter from outside North America. So keen was I to create a design for this inspirational company that I got in touch with them and the lovely Daniella invited me to submit anyway for possible inclusion on the designer jots blog

Congratulations to the winners of the competition, Linda Solovic, Jennifer Orkin Lewis and Jana Curll.  Amazing designs, all of them, I feel so privileged to be included in the post. Thank you Carolyn Gavin and the Ecojot team.  See the winning designs here

This is the design I submitted and the idea behind it,

Each tree ring acts as a record of the climate in which it was formed, changing its size, composition and shape. My design serves as a reminder of their beauty and the importance of looking after this natural archive.  My take on tree rings includes the addition of hand drawn tribal patterns and a splash of colour!

MATS Bootcamp Marches on.

This has been the second month of MATS Bootcamp and I am loving it. Some would say I am a little obsessed!  It is hard not to check the facebook group posts all the time but I am finally getting a grip on that.

The main point of taking part in Bootcamp for me was to establish what my illustration style actually is. (and to get this website up an running).  I have been a commercial designer for 13 years and can turn my hand to lots of styles.  This month was tricky for me (I design fabric repeats every day in my job as a textile designer so it should have been easy)  I definitely overthought the whole process but in the end I am really happy with the results. here are a few images of my sketches and then final designs.

Initial idea, not loving it.

No more procrastinating!

After years of planning a portfolio/blog/website I have finally taken the plunge.  The catalyst? signing up for Lilla Rogers MATS bootcamp.  Here are a few sketches from the first mini assignment
